Glossary of Law Terms

Annotated: Annotated means that there are cross references and information to aid in interpreting the law or section.
Case Name: In addition to having a citation, each case has a case name. The common case name usually consists of two names separated by a v. (Roe v. Wade). The name to the left of the v' or the first name is usually the plaintiff/petitioner/appellant. The second name or the one tot he right of the v' is the defendant/respondent/appellee.

Citation: Indicates where the information can be located. (410 U.S. 113). There are 3 basic parts to a citation. The first number refers to the volume, the letters to the source, and the second numbers refer to the page. When seeing the citation 410 U.S. 113, you should recognize that as volume 410 of the Untied States Reports page 113.

Digests: Appellate court case opinions arranged in subject order.

et seq.: The first page and the following pages.

Parallel Citation: If a case is reported in more than one reporter, usually the parallel citations will be given. When you find a Supreme Court opinion referred to, often three citations will follow the case name. The three citations are known as parallel cites because they refer to the same case as reported by the different publishers. Example: 410 U.S. 113; 35 L.Ed. 147; and 93 S.Ct. 705.

Pocket Part: A pamphlet placed in the back of a bond volume to update the bound materials. Usually pocket parts are published annually.

Primary source materials: the law itself, constitutions, charters, court decisions and opinions, executive orders, legislative-passed laws, etc.

Reporters: Supreme and Appellate court case opinions arranged in chronological order.

Secondary source materials: digests, indices, citators, reviews, etc.
